Mug Teppe, also known as Mug Fortress, is an ancient archaeological site located in Panjakent, Tajikistan. This historic mound dates back to the early medieval times and is thought to be the remains of ancient Panjakent's fortress. Spanning an area of approximately 12 hectares, Mug Teppe is positioned strategically overlooking the Zeravshan River valley, which made it an important military and defensive site in the past. The fortress was once a lively citadel, with evidence of residential areas, administrative buildings, and Zoroastrian fire temples discovered through archeological excavations. Artefacts such as ceramics, coins, and various objects indicating a high level of craftsmanship and culture have been unearthed, providing insights into the life and society that once thrived there. The history of Mug Teppe is closely connected with the Sogdian culture, which was an important link along the Silk Road. Today, the site attracts researchers and tourists intrigued by its history and the panoramic views it offers of the surrounding landscapes.
