Type of destination: Historical/Spiritual Site
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
Jabal Al-Nour, also known as the Mountain of Light or Hill of Illumination, is one of the most revered natural landmarks in the Islamic world, located near Mecca in the Hejazi region of Saudi Arabia. The mountain is modest in height, reaching approximately 642 meters (2,106 feet) above sea level. It holds profound significance for Muslims due to the Hira cave located near its summit. According to Islamic tradition, it is in this cave that the Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation from the angel Gabriel, marking the beginning of the Quran's transmission. This event took place during the last 10 nights of the month of Ramadan, which is why the site attracts a significant number of pilgrims, especially during the holy month. The climb to the cave is a steep and strenuous journey, often undertaken as an act of devotion. The surroundings of Jabal Al-Nour offer breathtaking views, and despite the rigorous walk, the spiritual reward and historical significance draw visitors from around the world.
