Mecca, also known as Makkah, is located in the Hejazi region of Saudi Arabia. It is the holiest city in Islam and the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad. Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world perform the Hajj pilgrimage, which is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by all adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey. The city is centered around the Masjid al-Haram or the Grand Mosque, which is the direction of prayer for Muslims (qibla) and is home to the Kaaba, a cube-shaped building that Muslims aim towards during their five daily prayers. Mecca is a city of great significance in Islamic tradition and history. Access to Mecca is restricted; only Muslims are allowed to enter the city. The area around the city is mountainous, contributing to its isolation from other nearby cities and towns. Mecca has become increasingly urbanized in recent years, with the Saudi government investing heavily in transportation, lodging, and infrastructure to accommodate the vast influx of pilgrims.
