Kanmangafuchi Abyss is a picturesque gorge located along the Daiya River in Nikko, Japan. Created by an eruption of Mount Nantai, this stunning natural wonder is known for its scenic beauty and the series of stone statues of Jizo, a Bodhisattva who cares for the deceased. This place of natural beauty is also wrapped in folklore, with a legend claiming that the Jizo statues are uncountable, and each attempt to count them results in a different number. Kanmangafuchi was formed some 7,000 years ago and spans a few hundred meters, where visitors can walk along a pleasant path that offers views of the river's swirling waters and lush greenery. The walking trail alongside the gorge is not very long, but it is a tranquil space where visitors can enjoy the peaceful sound of the flowing river and the spiritual presence of the Jizo statues adorned with red bibs. Kanmangafuchi is especially beautiful during the cherry blossom season and the autumn when the leaves change colors, making it a favorite spot for both tourists and locals seeking serenity.
