Type of destination: Natural Attraction
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
Kegon Falls is one of the most renowned and majestic waterfalls in Japan, located in the mountainous area of Nikko National Park, Tochigi Prefecture. The falls are a natural marvel, where the waters of Lake Chuzenji cascade down a nearly 97-meter (~318 ft) cliff in a dramatic display of raw power and beauty. The main falls are accompanied by a dozen smaller waterfalls, which are collectively known as the Kegon Falls. Surrounded by lush forests and rugged cliffs, the area is especially popular in autumn when the foliage turns brilliantly colorful, creating a spectacular backdrop. The waterfall can be viewed from a free observation platform at the top or from a paid platform at the base after a descent by elevator. Kegon Falls also holds cultural significance and is often featured in Japanese literature and art. In addition to the waterfall itself, the region offers a variety of hot springs, hiking trails, and the historical shrines and temples of Nikko, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
