Shinkyo Bridge, also known as the Sacred Bridge, is an iconic structure located in the city of Nikko, Japan. This exquisite vermilion-lacquered wooden bridge spans across the Daiya River and serves as the entrance to Nikko's sacred shrines and temples. It is part of the Futarasan Shrine and is considered one of Japan's three finest bridges. According to legend, the bridge was constructed by the priest Shodo Shonin, who introduced Buddhism to Nikko and with the help of two snakes, crossed the river here. The original bridge dates back to 1636 and was reserved primarily for religious processaries, but the present structure was rebuilt in 1904. Shinkyo Bridge is renowned for its stunning design and picturesque surroundings, including lush mountains and vibrant foliage, particularly during autumn when the leaves are changing color. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its historical and cultural significance is recognized worldwide, making it an essential visit for tourists exploring the rich history and spiritual sites of Nikko.
