Kaptai Lake is the largest man-made lake in Bangladesh, located in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. It was created in the early 1960s by damming the Karnaphuli River with the Kaptai Dam for a hydro-electric project. The lake stretches over an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometers, thus becoming an important feature for irrigation, flood control, and aquaculture. Its serene and picturesque beauty, with clear blue waters surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills, makes it a popular tourist destination. Visitors can enjoy recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and kayaking or simply bask in the tranquil environment. The lake also houses the submerged town of Kaptaimukh, and during the winter, the ruins can sometimes be seen, offering an intriguing glimpse into the past. The indigenous communities around the lake add a vibrant cultural element to the region. Traditional homes on stilts, local handcrafts, and cultural festivals offer an insight into the unique lifestyle and culture of Chittagong’s tribal people.
