Karagöz Museum (Bursa) History

Welcome to the Karagöz Museum in Bursa, Turkey

The city of Bursa, historically known as the first Ottoman capital, offers a rich blend of cultural heritage and modern allure. It is in this city that the Karagöz Museum, dedicated to the traditional Turkish shadow puppetry, finds its home. Shadow puppetry, known as "Karagöz and Hacivat," is an ancient form of Turkish entertainment that has been loved for centuries.

The History of Karagöz

The roots of Karagöz puppetry are deeply entwined with the culture and history of Turkey, dating back to the late 14th century. Legend has it that the two main characters, Karagöz (meaning "blackeye" in Turkish) and Hacivat, were workers on the construction of a mosque in Bursa. Their witty and humorous banter was believed to have distracted the other workers, leading to a delay in the construction. This amusing interaction was much loved by the sultan, who then ordered it to be turned into a theater performance. Over time, Karagöz became not only a popular form of entertainment but also an art that poked fun at social issues of the period, bringing laughter to many generations.
