Khunjerab Pass, situated in the Karakoram Mountains, is a high mountain pass on the northern border of Pakistan with China. At an elevation of 4,693 meters, it is the highest paved international border crossing in the world and the highest point on the Karakoram Highway. The pass is strategically significant, connecting Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region with China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The geography of the pass is characterized by jagged mountain peaks and unique alpine landscapes, making it a popular site for adventurous tourists and researchers alike. The region is home to a variety of wildlife including the rare Marco Polo sheep and snow leopards. It's part of the Khunjerab National Park, which was established to protect these species. The pass remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall and opens from May to November. Infrastructure at the pass includes a customs and immigration post on both sides.
