By Road

The only way to reach Khunjerab Pass is by road. The Karakoram Highway, also known as N-35, is the key road leading up to the pass. This is the preferred method of transportation, as it offers an adventurous journey with breathtaking views.

  • From Islamabad: One would need to drive to Gilgit from Islamabad via the KKH. This is a lengthy journey of approximately 15 hours, often split into multiple days with stopovers in places like Besham or Naran (season dependant).
  • From Gilgit: From the city of Gilgit, the Khunjerab Pass is roughly a 6-8 hour drive. Travelers usually spend a night at Hunza or Sost before making the ascent to the Pass.
  • Private cars or Jeeps can be rented for the journey, or travelers can opt for public buses that run daily from different cities to Hunza. From Hunza, one can hire local jeeps or join a tour group to go up to the Pass.

By Air

For those who prefer flying, Gilgit Airport and Skardu Airport are the closest options. From there, you will have to hire a car or join a tour to make your way up to Hunza and then on to Khunjerab Pass.

When planning your trip, it's essential to consider the following:

  • Travel Season: The best time to visit Khunjerab Pass is between May and October, as during the winter months the pass is often closed due to heavy snowfall.
  • Permit Requirements: Foreign tourists may require a special permit to visit the border areas near Khunjerab Pass. Check with local authorities for the latest requirements.
  • Altitude Sickness: Since Khunjerab Pass is at a very high elevation (4,693 meters or 15,397 feet), prepare for altitude sickness by acclimatizing properly.
  • Supplies and Clothing: Pack warm clothing, as temperatures drop significantly, even during summer. Also, ensure you have plenty of supplies and emergency kits, as the remote region has limited facilities.
