Kofukuji Temple was established in 669 AD, during the Asuka period, by Kagami no Okimi. It was originally built in Yamashina, Kyoto, and was later moved to its current location in Nara in 710 AD.
The main attractions include the five-story pagoda, which is the second tallest in Japan and a national treasure; the three-story pagoda; the Tokondo (Eastern Golden Hall); and the National Treasure Museum, which houses a large collection of Japanese Buddhist art. The temple precincts also offer a serene environment for visitors to enjoy.
Kofukuji Temple grounds are open to the public 24/7 year-round. However, the National Treasure Museum and Eastern Golden Hall have specific opening times which are typically from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, though times can vary by season. It is recommended to check ahead of your visit for the most current information.
