Kuruma is a small village in the Puri district of Odisha, India, known for the ancient Buddhist site that was excavated here. Situated around 8 km from the famous Sun Temple in Konark, Kuruma provides a historical insight into the region's rich Buddhist heritage. It is believed to date back to the 9th century, which coincides with the post-Gupta period and is contemporary to the construction of the Sun Temple. The excavations have revealed the remains of Buddhist structures and antiquities, including a seated Buddha figure in bhumisparsha mudra, images of Heruka, terracotta seals, and other artifacts. The serene and simplistic layout is reflective of the monastic architectures that thrived in Odisha during ancient times. Visitors can see the remnants of a brick monastery, a large stupa, and other small stupas dotting the landscape. Kuruma provides a tranquil experience away from the bustling tourist paths, allowing for a conceptual revisit to the life and times of ancient Buddhist monks.
