The Living Root Bridges of Mawlynnong are an extraordinary natural phenomena and a testament to the bio-engineering skills of the Khasi tribe in Meghalaya, India. These bridges are formed by guiding the flexible roots of the Ficus elastica tree across rivers and streams, allowing them to intertwine and grow over years to form sturdy, living structures that can bear the weight of humans crossing them. The process is slow, taking 10-15 years for a bridge to become fully functional. Among these, the 'Double Decker' bridge in Cherrapunji is the most famous, but many such bridges exist in the region. Sometimes reaching over 100 feet in length, they are a sustainable alternative to wooden bridges that would rot in the moist environment. Mawlynnong, recognized as 'Asia's Cleanest Village', is a gateway to these wonders and provides a serene cultural experience, showcasing the beauty of tribal life alongside their harmonious relationship with nature.
