Welcome to the Mammoth Museum in Yakutsk, Russia

The Mammoth Museum, officially known as The Kingdom of Permafrost, is situated in Yakutsk, the capital city of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in Russia. Yakutsk is renowned for being one of the coldest cities on Earth, which contributes to the incredible preservation of permafrost and, consequently, the mammoth remains that are found within it. The museum has become an exciting point of interest for tourists fascinated by prehistoric life and the mysteries locked within the permafrost.

History of the Mammoth Museum

Established in 1991, the museum is part of the Melnikov Permafrost Institute. The museum showcases a wide range of Ice Age exhibits, including preserved mammoth remains that are thousands of years old. Tourism to this remote part of Russia started to develop significantly after the fall of the Soviet Union when Russia opened up to international visitors. The allure of seeing massive and incredibly well-preserved specimens from the Pleistocene era has drawn tourists and scientists alike to the museum.

Over the years, the museum has expanded its exhibits and improved its facilities to cater to increasing tourist interest. It now hosts a variety of educational activities including lectures and guided tours, all aimed at providing visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the region's unique permafrost and its paleontological treasures.

Latest Tourism Trends

In recent years, there has been an increase in experiential and educational tourism, with visitors seeking hands-on experiences and learning opportunities during their travels. The Mammoth Museum caters to this trend by offering immersive experiences, including the opportunity to enter actual permafrost tunnels where ancient animals were found. The museum’s dedication to research and education aligns perfectly with this growing movement in tourism.

Eco-tourism is another significant trend, and the Mammoth Museum contributes positively by promoting awareness about climate change and its impact on permafrost. This is an important topic as melting permafrost can lead to the release of greenhouse gases and has implications for the preservation of the region's paleontological resources.
