Yakutsk is the capital city of the Sakha Republic, Russia, located about 450 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Positioned on the Lena River, it's one of the coldest major cities in the world. The city is a major port on the river during the summer months when the river is not frozen. The region around Yakutsk is rich in natural resources, particularly diamonds, which are a substantial part of the local economy. The city itself has a population of approximately 300,000 inhabitants. Despite the harsh climate, Yakutsk hosts several research institutes and universities specializing in disciplines such as permafrost and agriculture adapted to the extreme cold. Traditional wooden architecture can be seen throughout the city, bearing traits of the Sakha culture with Asian influences. Yakutsk is also known for its cultural scene, including theaters and a symphony orchestra, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of its residents who thrive in an environment where temperatures can plummet to below -50 degrees Celsius during the winter months.
