Mandalay Hill is a 240 meter (790 ft) hill located to the northeast of downtown Mandalay in Myanmar. It is one of the major pilgrimage sites for Burmese Buddhists and a primary tourist attraction. The hill's slopes are dotted with numerous pagodas and monasteries and are integral to the city's skyline. At its summit, the Sutaungpyei (literally 'Wish-fulfilling') Pagoda beckons visitors to enjoy a panoramic view of the city and its surrounding plains. The hill is known for its abundance of Buddhist imagery and its historical significance tied to the legend of the Buddha, who purportedly made a prophecy regarding the founding of a great city at its base. Mandalay Hill is also significant in the history of Burmese literature and culture. Climbing Mandalay Hill involves ascending a flight of stairs which can be an enriching experience as you pass by a host of temples and statues, or, for those who prefer it, a modern escalator and lifts are also available at the hill's southern and northern approaches.
