Mawsynram Village Tourism

Mawsynram, a village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, India, is famed for being one of the wettest places on Earth. The village is located 60 kilometers from Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya, and is approximately 1400 meters above sea level. Mawsynram experiences an annual rainfall of about 11,871 millimeters, primarily due to its unique location which allows for the intense monsoonal precipitation. The name 'Mawsynram' translates to 'the abode of the clouds,' and it is precisely this incessant rainfall that nourishes the lush, rich forests and grasslands of the region. Mawsynram is also known for its unique 'Mawsynram Formation,' which consists of a gigantic stalagmite formed inside a cave to resemble a 'Shivling'. The culture of the village is deep-rooted in tribal traditions, and the local population primarily belongs to the Khasi tribe, known for their matrilineal society where lineage and inheritance are traced through women. Besides the breathtaking landscapes and wet climate, the village also presents a magnificent view of the Khasi hills and offers a glimpse into the traditional lifestyles of the tribal community.
