Miagao Church, officially known as Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church, is a quintessential example of the Baroque-Rococo church architecture in the Philippines. Constructed in 1786 and completed in 1797, it stands as a fortress church in Miagao, Iloilo, Philippines. It was designed to serve a dual purpose as a religious venue and as a defensive tower against Moro raiders during that period. The church's facade is noted for its intricate sculptural bas-relief in the center, featuring St. Christopher carrying the Christ Child, all set within a coconut tree. Flanking elements incorporate imagery characterizing the locale, such as papaya and guava shrubs. The church was built with thick walls and watchtowers, signifying its defensive role. In 1993, the church was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the 'Baroque Churches of the Philippines', owing to its historical, cultural, and architectural significance. The church has withstood the test of time, including destructive forces of nature such as earthquakes and typhoons, serving as an indomitable symbol of Filipino faith, resilience, and community spirit.
