Must-Try Foods In Mokokchung (Nagaland) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Mokokchung, Nagaland

Mokokchung is a cultural epicenter for the Ao Naga tribe in Nagaland, known for its rich traditions and gastronomic delights. The food culture here is a reflection of the indigenous lifestyle, deeply rooted in agriculture and hunting. However, with the practices changing over time due to ethical considerations and government policies, the diet has seen a shift to more farm-raised meats and locally grown produce.

The traditional Naga cuisine is known for its minimal use of oil and spices, with an emphasis on smoked, boiled, and steamed preparations. Fermentation also plays a significant role in their food, contributing to unique flavors and preservation methods. Although predominantly a meat-eating community, there are also plenty of plant-based options derived from local crops and foraged forest foods.
