The Moscow Metro (Московский метрополитен) is an extensive transit system and can be accessed through numerous points in the city. Here are the main ways of getting to the Moscow Metro:

By Air

If you are arriving from an international destination, you will likely land at one of Moscow's major airports:

  • Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO): Take the Aeroexpress train to Belorussky Rail Terminal, then transfer to the Metro (Belorusskaya station, lines 2 or 5).
  • Domodedovo International Airport (DME): Take the Aeroexpress train to Paveletsky Rail Terminal, then transfer to the Metro (Paveletskaya station, lines 2 or 5).

By Bus or Trolleybus

Several bus and trolleybus lines run through Moscow and have stops at or near Metro stations. Use apps or local information touch-points for the best connecting line.

By Car or Taxi

If traveling by car or taxi, every Metro station is indicated by a large red 'M' sign that can be easily spotted from main roads. Parking can be limited near the stations, so using public transportation to access the Metro is advisable.

By Metro

Once you are in the city center or staying at a Moscow hotel, finding a nearby Metro station is straightforward. Look for the red 'M' signs that signify an entrance to the Metro. Maps and apps can provide directions to the nearest station.

Tips for Using the Moscow Metro:

  • Purchase a Troika card for convenient fare payment across different types of public transportation.
  • During rush hours, the Metro can be very crowded, so plan your trip accordingly.
  • The Moscow Metro is known for its beautiful architecture and art; some stations are tourist attractions in themselves.

Note that signage and announcements in the Metro are primarily in Russian. English signage is available in some areas, but having a translation app or guide can be useful.
