Welcome to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux stands as one of France's premier art galleries, with a collection that spans from the Renaissance to the present day. Located in the heart of Bordeaux, a city renowned for its rich history and contribution to the arts, the museum has become an integral part of the cultural landscape of the region.

History of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux

The Musée des Beaux-Arts was established in 1801 by the painter Pierre Lacour and is one of the oldest public galleries in France. It was part of a French initiative to decentralize culture during the post-revolutionary period. Its inception aimed at educating the public and enhancing the appreciation of fine art outside the capital, Paris.

Throughout the 19th century, the museum expanded with significant contributions from local patrons, which included both Old Master and contemporary works. Its collection grew substantially, embodying the rich narrative of European art. Key additions from the likes of Delacroix and Reynolds solidified the museum's standing in the art world.

During the 20th century, the museum continued to acquire important works from modern artists and also started embracing contemporary art, showcasing local and international artists and reflecting the changing dynamics of the art scene.

Tourism and the Museum

Bordeaux, already famous for its vineyards and classical architecture, experienced an increase in tourism at the beginning of the 21st century. The museum has become a pivotal destination for tourists, offering an intimate look into the artistic heritage of France and beyond.

In recent years, the museum has taken steps to improve accessibility and visitor experience. This has included renovating exhibition spaces, improving educational services, and offering multimedia tools to engage audiences of all ages.
