Type of destination: Historic Site
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
The Muslim Quarter is a vibrant area located in the heart of Xi'an, the capital city of Shaanxi Province, China. Known for its rich cultural tapestry and bustling atmosphere, it is home to one of the largest Muslim communities in China, mainly Hui people. This quarter covers several blocks inhabited by over 20,000 Muslims. It is an important historical site, with the Great Mosque, a blend of Chinese and Islamic architecture, serving as a key cultural landmark. The Muslim Quarter is famous for its traditional food scene; visitors can explore the numerous stalls and restaurants that line the streets offering an array of halal dishes, including the famous Xi'an specialty, Yang Rou Pao Mo (mutton stew with unleavened bread). The narrow lanes are crammed with shops selling a diverse selection of crafts, souvenirs, antiques, and clothing. It's a place where visitors can experience the confluence of Chinese and Islamic influences, making it a must-visit location for those interested in history, gastronomy, and culture.
