Visit the National Research Centre on Yak, Dirang

The National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY) is located in the picturesque town of Dirang in the West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh, India. The center is dedicated to the improvement and conservation of yak genetics and to boost the socio-economic status of local yak herders. One of the best times to visit NRCY is between March and May when the climate is pleasant with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 18°C. This period marks the beginning of spring leading to summer, presenting travelers with a chance to witness the lush green landscapes and vibrant blossoms. The temperate weather makes it ideal for tourists to explore outdoor activities and the center’s facilities without the hindrance of excessive cold or rainfall.

Alternatively, visiting during the months of September to November is also recommended, as this period follows the monsoon season and offers clear skies and a refreshing environment. The surroundings are rejuvenated with the post-monsoon greenery making it a great time for photography and nature studies. During this post-monsoon season, temperatures generally stay within a comfortable range of 6°C to 14°C. However, visitors should be mindful that winters, starting in late November, can be extremely harsh in Dirang with temperatures dropping below freezing, which may not be ideal for everyone. Hence, for a balance of good weather and accessibility, the aforementioned months are considered optimal to plan a visit to the National Research Centre on Yak.
