Old Walled City of Shibam (UNESCO World Heritage Site) Tourism
Type of destination: Historic City
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
Shibam, often referred to as 'the oldest skyscraper city in the world' or 'the Manhattan of the desert', is a striking example of early urban planning and the vertical construction techniques that have become synonymous with modern metropolises. This UNESCO World Heritage site, located in the Hadramawt Valley of Yemen, dates back to the 16th century and is renowned for its distinctive mud-brick tower houses, some of which rise over 30 meters tall. These buildings are constructed one atop the other, sharing walls and showcasing the city's incredible engineering prowess and adaptation to the arid climate. The city's layout, characterized by narrow, maze-like streets, was designed for defense, and the high-rise structure served to maximize the available area within the protective city walls. Shibam embodies a unique architectural response to environmental and socio-political needs of its time. The preservation of the site, however, is challenged by weathering, the need for constant maintenance of the mud-brick structures, and modern-day conflicts.
