Type of destination: Cultural Historical Site
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 days
Shibam is an ancient city located in the central part of Yemen, known for its unique and iconic architecture. Fondly referred to as the 'Manhattan of the desert,' the city is famous for its mudbrick-made high-rise buildings, some reaching over 30 meters tall. These structures date back to the 16th century and are constructed out of mud bricks, which is a testament to the ingenuity of Yemeni engineering. Shibam serves as an extraordinary example of vertical construction in response to limited space within the fortified city walls, which also provided protection against Bedouin attacks. The city's layout, characterized by narrow streets and tall buildings, has earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Despite its ancient appearance, Shibam has all the hallmarks of a modern urban center, with each building functioning as an independent unit. The preservation of this historical city is a concern, particularly due to the challenges posed by weather erosion and the need for constant maintenance of the mudbrick structures. Shibam holds not only architectural significance but also vast historical importance as a reflection of Yemen's rich past.
