Orto Tokoy Reservoir, also known as the Orto-Tokoi Reservoir, is an important artificial lake in the central part of Kyrgyzstan. It's located about 60 kilometers east of Balykchy, a town lying on the western edge of Lake Issyk-Kul. Created on the Chu River, this reservoir was formed by the construction of a dam for irrigation and water supply purposes. The surrounding terrain is typical of the Kyrgyz landscape – mountainous with semi-arid steppe – reflecting the natural beauty and diversity of the region. The reservoir's large expanse of water attracts various bird species, making it a favored spot for local bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. In addition to being a biodiversity hotspot, Orto Tokoy also plays a critical role in local agriculture, storing water that is crucial for the irrigation of nearby farmlands. The lake area offers recreational opportunities such as fishing, picnicking, and hiking. Although it is not as widely recognized as a tourist destination compared to the nearby Lake Issyk-Kul, Orto Tokoy Reservoir provides a peaceful and scenic escape for those looking to experience the quieter side of Kyrgyzstan's landscape.
