Type of destination: Natural Attraction
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 days
Charyn Canyon, often referred to as the Grand Canyon's little brother, offers a majestic landscape located in the Almaty Region of Kazakhstan, near the Kyrgyzstan border. The canyon stretches for approximately 154 kilometers along the Charyn River. Geological formations here are a result of the sedimentary rock deposits laid down over millions of years and subsequently sculpted by elements into dramatic formations. The Valley of Castles, with its unusual rock structures, is one of the most popular spots, drawing visitors with its impressive shapes and shadows cast by the changing angle of the sun. Wildlife in the region includes a variety of birds, reptiles, and small mammals. Vegetation is sparse but includes unique species adapted to the arid conditions. The area is accessible via rugged trails, so visitors can hike or drive through parts of the canyon. Due to its natural beauty and geological significance, Charyn Canyon is a prime spot for outdoor activities like hiking, photography, and picnicking.
