How to Reach Owakudani

Owakudani is an active volcanic valley known for its sulfur vents and hot springs, and it is a popular destination for tourists visiting Hakone. To visit Owakudani, you will likely start your journey from Tokyo.

From Tokyo to Hakone

By Train: The easiest way to travel from Tokyo to Hakone is by taking the Odakyu Electric Railway from Shinjuku Station to Hakone-Yumoto Station. For a more luxurious experience, consider the Odakyu Romancecar, which offers reserved seating and large windows.

By Shinkansen: Take the Tokaido Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station to Odawara Station. From there, you’ll need to transfer to the Hakone Tozan Line to reach Hakone-Yumoto Station.

From Hakone-Yumoto to Owakudani

Once in Hakone, you can get to Owakudani using the following methods:

  • Hakone Tozan Cable Car: From Hakone-Yumoto, take the Hakone Tozan Train to Gora Station. Transfer to the Hakone Tozan Cable Car, which will take you to Sounzan Station.
  • Hakone Ropeway: From Sounzan Station, board the Hakone Ropeway. It directly takes you to the Owakudani station. The ropeway offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and the opportunity to witness the volcanic activity of Owakudani up close.
