By Air

To reach Passu Cones by air, you first need to fly to the nearest airport, which is Gilgit Airport (GIL). Regular flights from the capital city, Islamabad, are operated by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). From Gilgit, you can hire a private taxi or take a local bus to reach Hunza Valley, which is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours away.

By Road

Traveling to Passu by road can be a spectacular journey in itself, as it takes you through some of the most stunning landscapes the country has to offer. From Islamabad: The overland journey from Islamabad to Hunza typically takes around 15-20 hours depending on road conditions and traffic. Most travelers take the Karakoram Highway (KKH), also known as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" due to its high elevation and the difficult conditions in which it was constructed. Along the way, you'll pass through major cities like Abbottabad, Mansehra, and Gilgit. From Gilgit to Passu: Once in Gilgit, continue on the KKH for another 2.5 to 3 hours to reach the Hunza Valley. Passu is located in the Upper Hunza region, approximately an hour's drive from Karimabad, the main town of Hunza. The journey from Gilgit to Passu itself is quite spectacular, with views of several tall peaks, including Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar.

  • Ensure that you check the local road conditions and weather forecasts prior to travel, as landslides can occur, especially during the monsoon season.
  • Acclimate to the high altitude by spending a day or two in Hunza before trekking nearby.
  • Consider hiring a local guide or joining a tour group if you are unfamiliar with the area or wish to trek in the region.
  • Carry appropriate clothing as even during the summer months as the weather can be unpredictable and temperatures can drop significantly at high altitudes.
  • Since the terrain can be rough, it's advisable to use a 4x4 vehicle if you're driving to Passu.
