Historic Significance of Qala'at ar-Rabad
Also known as Ajloun Castle, Qala'at ar-Rabad stands as a prime example of Islamic architecture and military fortification. It was built in 1184 AD by Izz al-Din Usama, a general of the famous Sultan Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi (Saladin). Its strategic position atop Mount 'Auf, overlooking the Jordan Valley, served to control the trade routes between Jordan and Syria, and to ward off the Crusader threats from the nearby Belvoir Castle.
