Rimyongsu Waterfall, located near Samjiyon in the Ryanggang Province of North Korea, is one of the country's natural splendors. This magnificent site is nestled against the backdrop of the Baekdu Mountains, showcasing a unique set of cascades that emerge from a series of spring waters rather than a river. The falls are named 'Rimyongsu' because of the thunderous sound of the water hitting the rocks, which is reminiscent of the neighing of a horse (‘rimyong’). The waterfall is an astonishing geological phenomenon because it remains unfrozen even in the harsh winters, due to the water's rapid flow and the geothermal heat of the area. The site is composed of various falls emerging from different points and converging into the Rimyong River. The beauty of the waterfall amidst scenic views of the mountainous terrain makes it a popular spot for tourists and a symbol of pride for North Koreans. It is also recognized for its importance to biodiversity as the surrounding area is home to a variety of plant and animal species.
