Samjiyon is among the more remote and scenic locations in North Korea, situated in Ryanggang Province. Boasting a picturesque landscape, the city is encircled by the Baekdu Mountains and is most well-known for being near Mount Paektu (Baekdu), the highest peak on the Korean Peninsula, revered as a sacred site with significant cultural and historical importance to Korean people on both sides of the border. The region experiences harsh, cold winters with substantial snowfall, making it a popular spot for skiing and snow festivals. The Paektusan Hero Youth Power Station and Samjiyon Grand Monument are notable landmarks. The town also serves as a base for visitors looking to explore the surrounding wilderness areas, including the Paektu Plateau, known for its beautiful alpine forests and volcanic features like Lake Chon, a crater lake atop Mount Paektu. The Samjiyon Orchestra, named after the city, is also something that has gained international recognition.
