Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
Paektu Secret Camp is a historic site located in the Samjiyon district of Ryanggang Province in North Korea. It is reputedly the birthplace of Kim Jong-il, the son of the country's founding leader, Kim Il-sung. This location is heavily mythologized in North Korean ideological teachings. The camp is situated in a dense forest area and is part of the 'Paektu Mountain Revolutionary Battle Site.' Paektu Mountain, also known as Baekdu Mountain, is a volcanic mountain that has significant cultural importance to Koreans in both North and South Korea as a spiritual symbol. The secret camp narrative is tied to the anti-Japanese resistance efforts during World War II, and the site is designed to serve as a reminder of the Kim family's role in the fight for Korean independence. The camp includes log cabins and other revolutionary sites, and visitors can see statues and historical displays intended to immortalize the activities of Kim Il-sung's guerrilla forces. This location is remote and most accessible from neighboring cities like Samjiyon.
