Type of destination: City
Ideal visit duration: 3-5 days
Salalah, situated in the southern region of Oman, is the capital city of Dhofar Governorate. Known for its unique climate, Salalah is famous for the Khareef or monsoon season, which brings a refreshing transformation to the landscape between June and September. During this time, the normally arid region is cloaked in verdant greenery, waterfalls, and mist, attracting visitors seeking respite from the heat of the Arabian Peninsula. Outside the Khareef, the city reveals a serene coastal atmosphere with white sandy beaches like Al Mughsail lined with frankincense trees, and a temperate climate unusual for the Gulf region. The historical heritage of Salalah is rich, underscored by landmarks such as the ruins of the ancient city of Al Baleed, the tomb of the biblical prophet Job, and the Al Hosn Souq, where traditional Omani handicrafts and incense can be purchased. Salalah also acts as a gateway for exploring the breathtaking landscapes of the Dhofar Governorate, from the Empty Quarter, the largest contiguous sand desert in the world, to the mountainous terrains that frame the city.
