The Basilica of Santo Stefano, also known as the Seven Churches, is a complex of religious edifices located in Bologna, Italy. It stands in Piazza Santo Stefano and is locally referred to as Sette Chiese ('Seven Churches') because it was once composed of seven different churches and chapels, dating back to the 5th century. Today, four of these buildings remain. The complex has undergone many transformations and restorations over the centuries. It has Romanesque and Lombard elements, showcasing a mix of architectural styles that capture the historical and cultural transitions of the area. Visitors can wander through the beautiful courtyards, explore the interconnected churches, and admire the art and artifacts that speak volumes of Bologna's religious heritage. Among the notable sections is the Church of the Crucifix, with its large crucifix at the altar, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, modeled after the Jerusalem original. Santo Stefano attracts those who are interested in religion, art, history, and architecture alike.
