TL;DR: Buy your tickets in advance or don't buy them at all.
STAFF ARE AWFUL. They took 360 RMB and gave me NO tickets, NO REFUND. Definitely book online. They are rude to both Chinese and foreigners. I paid for 2 tickets using WeChat yet the employee refused to give me them saying she hadn't received the payment yet. I showed her my phone for proof and the Chinese customer *right* behind me (who had been very closely watching my phone while I paid) told her too. She kept my phone for a while and looked at the computer for around 10-15 minutes "checking for the payment". This was 40 minutes before closing time so lots of people were trying to get a ticket. Apparently their system didn't receive it but instead of offering a solution like a cash refund or just printing the tickets anyway (because how much can an elevator ride cost) she coldly said there was nothing she could do and since I'm a foreigner I can't get a refund via WeChat. To add, this discussion WAS ALL IN CHINESE. Luckily I went with a Chinese speaker, but I can't imagine how she'd have handled this in English. Before my turn, some other foreigners very clearly asked for 2 tickets to "the very top", "as high as possible", "the top of the top" but she ignored them and tried to give them tickets to the 118th floor until they saw the price on the card machine and told her again. Also she suddenly told all the Chinese visitors waiting behind us that she was no longer selling tickets after making them wait 10-15minutes behind me. There was at least one other person in the booth yet at no point did she ask for someone to serve customers at the other window. Strangely enough, after we finally left, she did sell tickets to a couple more groups even though there was only 10 minutes left to go up. Now I'm back home my bank confirmed the money has left my account and it's the tower's responsibility to give it back. If I want a refund from them I have to have it transferred to a Chinese WeChat account, assuming it's now showing on their system. I'll call them tomorrow and find out.

Expensive, but worth it on a clear day
I love a good view so I wasn't going to turn down the chance to experience the world's highest observatory deck! On the advice of friends I booked both the 118th observation floor and the 126th floor to see the damper room. The views were great - I went in the morning on a clear day, and it wasn't too busy when I arrived. The damper room was very cool - I'm not sure the music/light show needs to be as long as it is, but the sculpture was beautiful. Everything I found online said take exit 6 from Lujiazu station, but I found that brought me out in a weird place and you can get to/from the metro underground. Sadly I failed to register the exit number, but take a moment to read the maps and work it out on arrival. Tickets are bought at ground level, the entrance to the tower is in the basement. Bring your passport!

Lovely views day and night. Light show as good too
Good view from the top. Took lots of photos in the day and when it got dark at the same visit. We brought a ticket which included the light show which was really good too, so when we came out of the light show it started to get dark outside which we was able to get more pictures. 100% recommend

Interesting but too crowded
Worth doing if you are staying close, but in our case we spent more time queuing than observing. It was a 30 min queue to get in, partly alleviated by the ground floor exhibits. The upward lift is fun due to its speed. The observation deck has two levels but the upper is roped off in part for the cafe and when I visited there was a massive queue to go down which obstructed a lot of the view. This is incredible, but there is so much other light it’s not easy to get decent pictures. It’s worth noting it’s not scary for those who don’t like heights. There are so many people it feels safe. Like many other attractions you need a passport, driving licence or other ID. Unusually they accept cash and credit cards, somewhat reluctantly. Don’t even think about going if it’s foggy.

Great view of Shanghai and the elevator trip was so chilled.
Fantastic views of Shanghai city, gives a great perspective of the size and spread. The view is impacted by the air conditions, but even if not a perfect viewing day, you still get a great view of how Shanghai developed. For those a bit squeamish of heights, the elevator trip up and back was the most relaxed I’ve been in a tall building. No jerky motion, no feeling of acceleration- physically it felt like we only went up two or three floors, and we were already there at the top, and the trip down just as passive. A great view and with 369 degrees, you can just spend time looking around.
