History of Tourism in Sharjah

Sharjah, one of the seven emirates that comprise the UAE, has a rich history that spans over 5,000 years. This heritage has contributed significantly to its tourism industry. Over the years, Sharjah has established itself as the cultural capital of the UAE. In 1998, it was named the Arab Cultural Capital by UNESCO, and tourism has been a focus for the emirate ever since, showcasing its commitment to education, culture, and history.

The development of destinations such as the Sharjah Aquarium is part of this broader context. It seeks to attract visitors by providing educational experiences whilst also contributing to the global efforts of marine conservation.

Sharjah Aquarium as a Tourist Destination

Since its inauguration, the Sharjah Aquarium has played a crucial role not only in showcasing the marine environment but also in its protection. Tourists are drawn to the site for its engaging displays and the relatively unique opportunity to learn about the local marine ecosystems.

The aquarium features 20 tanks holding a combined total of 1.8 million liters of water. It is home to an array of underwater species - more than 150 species - including coral reefs, seahorses, eels, and sharks. These marine habitats extend from the depths of the ocean to the coastal shallows, providing an all-encompassing experience.

Latest Tourism Trend

In recent years, the trend in Sharjah and across much of the UAE has been towards developing culturally significant and educational attractions. Increasing emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly practices within these attractions has also been noted. The UAE as a whole, and Sharjah more specifically, have started to focus more on family tourism, creating experiences that can be enjoyed by all age groups. Augmented reality experiences in museums and other interactive technological features have become more common to enhance the educational aspects of these visits.

Current trends also show a rise in offering tourist packages that include multiple attractions within the emirate, with the Sharjah Aquarium often being one key highlight. Such initiatives are set to improve Sharjah's visibility on the global tourism map, offering a blend of rich history, culture, and environmental conservation.
