Silchar, a serene city located in the southern part of Assam, is known as the gateway to the Barak Valley, which comprises the districts of Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi. It is the second-largest city in Assam after Guwahati and is famous for its tea, bamboo, and cane crafts. Silchar is especially significant for being a major educational hub in the region, housing the prestigious Assam University and the National Institute of Technology, Silchar. The local populace predominantly speaks Sylheti and Bengali, with a sizeable Assamese-speaking community. The city acts as a transit point to visit the nearby Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura states, and is also home to the historic Kachari Fort.
