Type of destination: River Island
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 days
Majuli, the world's largest river island, is located on the Brahmaputra River in Assam, India. Recognized for its breath-taking natural beauty and vibrant culture, Majuli represents an epicenter of Assamese civilization. Sprawling across approximately 352 square kilometers, Majuli is home to the indigenous Mishing tribe, who share the island with the Assamese and others, creating a melting pot of traditions and cultures. The island is noted for its unique biodiversity and is recognized as an important bird area by BirdLife International for its significant avifauna diversity. Majuli's landscape is marked by lush greenery, expansive rice fields, and wetlands. It is also famous for its Vaishnavite Satras, which are Hindu monasteries established in the 15th century by the saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva and his disciple Madhavdev. These Satras are centers of traditional Assamese cultural heritage, including art, music, dance, and drama. Unfortunately, erosion is a major concern as the island's size has been reducing over the years. There's a fervent effort to preserve the culture and heritage before it's lost to the river.
