Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace is a 17th-century palace situated in the city of Madurai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Constructed in 1636 AD by the ruler Thirumalai Nayak, this historic edifice is a classic fusion of Dravidian and Islamic architectural styles. The palace was originally four times larger than what we see today since most of it was demolished by Nayak's descendants. Renowned for its giant pillars and structures, the main attractions include the Swarga Vilasam (Celestial Pavilion) and the dancing hall. Intricately decorated with stucco work, the palace exhibits the grandeur of Tamil artistry combined with the architectural techniques from the Rajput and Mughal influences of the period. The courtyard and the extensive use of arches are characteristic of Mughal influence, while the domes and towers often represent South Indian architecture. This site is not only significant for its historical and architectural values but also for its role in the administrative functioning of the Nayaks and later as a venue for cultural events.
