Ungma Village is one of the oldest and largest Ao settlements in Nagaland, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the traditional customs and practices of the Ao tribe. The best time to visit Ungma Village is during the post-monsoon and winter months, from October to April. During this period, the weather is pleasant, with moderate temperatures that make exploring the village and participating in outdoor activities comfortable. The skies are usually clear, offering excellent views of the surrounding hills and landscapes. This is also the time when the village celebrates its local festivals, like the harvest festival, which can offer visitors an enriching cultural experience.
Specifically, the months of December and January are very popular among tourists as it coincides with various festivities such as Christmas and New Year, which are celebrated with great enthusiasm. Temperature during these months generally ranges from 4°C to 24°C. Moreover, if you visit in the early part of December, you may get the opportunity to witness the Hornbill Festival, Nagaland's biggest annual cultural extravaganza, held at Kisama heritage village, which is not too far from Mokokchung. While it is not held in Ungma itself, the festival serves as a showcase for the cultural heritage of all tribes of Nagaland, including the Ao community from Ungma.
