Vat Phou or Wat Phu is an impressive archeological site located in the southern part of Laos in the Champasak province, near the town of Pakse and close to the Thai border, specifically in the Issan region of Thailand. The temple complex is situated at the base of Mount Phu Kao and dates back to the 5th century, though it was later expanded and embellished during the 10th to 13th centuries under Khmer Hindu rule. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001, Vat Phou is considered a masterpiece of Khmer architecture, showcasing a blend of natural and historical heritage. The temple's layout is designed to represent the Hindu vision of the relationship between nature and humanity, with the sandstone structures aligned to the natural landscape including the mountain. Visitors can explore the ancient ruins, terraces, sanctuaries, and water features that show the complex's historical significance as a center for Hindu worship dedicated to the god Shiva before later becoming a Buddhist site. The Vat Phou Festival, held annually during the full moon of the third lunar month, is a significant event that attracts many visitors.
