Type of destination: Buddhist Temple
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
Wat Phnom is a Buddhist temple located on a small hill in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, which stands 27 meters above the ground. It is the tallest religious structure in the city and is the central point of Phnom Penhm. The site is said to have been established in 1372 when a wealthy widow called Lady Penh found four Buddha statues inside a tree floating on the river and decided to create a temple to house them on the nearby hill, which is how the city got its name. The temple has gone through numerous reconstructions, the last major restoration being in 1926. The current structure reflects traditional Khmer architecture with a central sanctuary, numerous stupas, statues of Buddha, and paintings depicting various scenes from the Buddha's life. The temple grounds are serene and contain lush gardens, making it an oasis in the middle of the bustling city. Wat Phnom is an iconic symbol of Phnom Penh and holds great cultural and religious significance to the locals. It is a popular spot for prayer and worship as well as a tourist attraction, where people can experience the spiritual and historical aspects of Cambodian culture.
