The Yuru Kabgyat Festival is a vibrant and joyous event celebrated with great pomp and fervor at Lamayuru Monastery, which is one of the oldest and most enchanting monasteries in Ladakh, northern India. Situated amidst the stark landscape of the region, the monastery stands on a rocky hill with a commanding view of the village and valley. Local lore holds that the site was once a lake, which dried up when the founder of the monastery, Naropa, prayed for the place to be suitable for building the monastery. This 2-day festival, which occurs in the 2nd or 5th month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, is characterized by the Cham dance - a masked dance where monks adorn spectacular costumes depicting various deities, demons and other characters and perform choreographed dances to the rhythm of traditional musical instruments, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. The festival is an excellent showcase of Ladakhi culture and religious fervor, attracting tourists and photographers from across the globe.
