The Zhuilu Old Trail is a historically significant hiking route located in the Taroko Gorge area of Hualien, Taiwan. The trail is known for offering some of the most stunning views in the region, as it traverses high above the dramatic landscape of towering marble cliffs and lush vegetation. Spanning roughly 10.3 kilometers, it is a remnant of a former cross-mountain trail used by the indigenous Truku people. The path, once used for hunting and travel between villages, was later expanded by the Japanese during their occupation of Taiwan for military purposes. One of the main features of the Zhuilu Old Trail is the narrow cliffside path that looms 500-700 meters above the Liwu River below, providing hikers with an adrenaline-fueled experience. The trail is well-maintained but due to its steepness and potential risks, a permit is required for access and visitor numbers are limited each day. Safety equipment like helmets is often recommended when hiking this trail.
