Sonmarg, which translates to 'Meadow of Gold', is an enchanting hill station located in the Ganderbal District of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 2,800 meters above sea level and is surrounded by snowy mountains that make it a picturesque destination. Sonmarg is the gateway to Ladakh and lies on the Srinagar-Leh highway. The pristine and tranquil environment of Sonmarg is graced by the Sindh River that meanders through the valley. Sonmarg is acclaimed for its lush green meadows, alpine flowers, dense forests, frozen lakes, and glaciers, with the most famous being the Thajiwas Glacier. This area is a starting point for treks to various mountain lakes such as the Vishansar, Krishnasar, and Gangabal. It is also an excellent base for adventure activities including trekking, alpine skiing, and angling. Sonmarg remains inaccessible during winter due to heavy snowfall and avalanches, but it transforms into a vibrant tourist spot from spring to early autumn.
