Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, is a city renown for its breathtaking natural beauty, gardens, waterfronts, and houseboats. Nestled amidst the Kashmir Valley on the banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus, and Dal and Nigeen lakes, Srinagar is celebrated for its vibrant houseboats and romantic Shikara rides. A city with a rich history that dates back at least to the 3rd century BC, it is home to ancient historical monuments like the Shankaracharya Temple and the Jamia Masjid. Srinagar is a reflection of both the cultural heritage of Kashmir as well as its picturesque landscapes; from its Mughal gardens, such as Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh, to the tranquil Hazratbal Shrine, which houses a relic believed to be the hair of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The city serves as a base for various tourist destinations in the vicinity, including Gulmarg, Sonmarg, and Pahalgam. The region's handicrafts, shawls, apple orchards, and dry fruit cultivation contribute to its economy and are also major attractions for visitors.
