Al Wakrah is an ancient city in the State of Qatar, located in the southern part of the country, just south of Doha, the capital city. While it originally prospered as a pearling and fishing village, Al Wakrah has grown substantially due to its proximity to Doha and the industrial area of Mesaieed. The city has a rich cultural history, with several historical mosques and a family beach. Its seafront, often referred to as Al Wakra Souq, reflects traditional Qatari architecture and offers a glimpse into the region's heritage, with shops selling crafts and local goods. Al Wakrah also includes a harbor with dhows, showcasing its maritime legacy. Modernization has brought Al Wakrah into the future with the Al Janoub Stadium, one of the 2022 FIFA World Cup venues, which boasts a design inspired by the sails of traditional Qatari dhows. This reflects the city's blend of ancient tradition and contemporary development. Despite its rapid growth, Al Wakrah's old and new towns are till divided by a buffer zone, which preserves the historical areas from encroachment.
