Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
Ankara Castle, also known as Ankara Kalesi, is a historical fortification prominently located in the old quarter of Ankara, Turkey. The exact origins of the castle are somewhat unclear, but it is believed to have been constructed during the Roman era and later expanded by the Byzantines. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous renovations and reconstructions under different empires, including the Seljuqs and the Ottomans. The walls of the castle stretch across a hilltop, providing a panoramic view of the city below. Inside the castle's inner keep, a quaint neighborhood with Ottoman-style houses, artisans, and souvenir shops gives visitors a sense of stepping back in time. While the castle's inner area is mainly residential, around the outskirts, one can discover various antique shops, cafes, and museums, including the open-air museum displaying Ankara’s ancient history. Ankara Castle is not just a testament to the city’s rich historical heritage, but it's also a cultural hub that reflects the life and traditions of the past.
