Type of destination: Cultural District
Ideal visit duration: Half day to full day
Asakusa is one of Tokyo's districts, where an atmosphere of the Tokyo of past decades survives. Asakusa's main attraction is Sensoji, a very popular Buddhist temple, built in the 7th century. The temple is approached via the Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries. Asakusa is also home to the Tokyo Skytree, the tallest structure in Japan and a new addition to the city's skyline. The area around Asakusa offers a variety of traditional foods and performances, and it's a favored spot to witness events like Sanja Matsuri, one of Tokyo's three great Shinto festivals. Historically, Asakusa was the center of Tokyo's low city, where entertainment, pleasure quarters, and art flourished. Today, it offers visitors a glimpse into the past with its architecture, shops, street festivals, and bygone charm that make it a worthwhile destination for those looking to experience traditional Tokyo.
